Do hosts have to accept guests with service animals?

Yes. Holidu hosts must welcome guests who rely on service animals and accommodate them just as they would any other guest. Service animals are not pets, so your pet policy does not apply to them.

What is a service animal?

A service animal is a specially trained companion that helps a person with a disability perform daily tasks. The most common service animals are dogs, including:

  • Guide dogs for blind or visually impaired guests
  • Hearing alert dogs for deaf or hard of hearing guests
  • Seizure alert dogs for guests with epilepsy
  • Assistance dogs for other disabilities

Can I charge extra for a service animal?

No. Because service animals are not pets, you cannot charge pet fees or extra cleaning fees for them.

What are my responsibilities as a host?

  • Allow service animals in all areas of the property open to guests.
  • Do not refuse a guest because of your pet policy.
  • Do not add pet fees or extra cleaning charges.

What is the legal basis for these rules?

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) requires equal access to public and private spaces for people with disabilities, including holiday homes. As a host in the European Union, these rules apply to you.

Which European laws apply in my country?
